Propagation

Harland Hand [1922-1998], inspired by the principles of fine art and rock formations in the High Sierra, designed this hillside garden with breathtaking views of San Francisco Bay.
Using concrete, curving lines and dramatic color combinations, Hand created an emotionally evocative space that houses an extraordinary plant collection.
Preservation of Rare Plants
Harland Hand was devoted to the collection and preservation of rare plants, and he generously shared these with others. On Marjory Harris's first visit to his garden in February 1982, Hand gave her three flats of choice plants. Some of those plants were preserved in Harris's San Francisco garden and returned to the Hand garden, or reaquired after she moved there.
One of the goals of the Harland Hand Memorial Garden is to preserve and increase the extraordinary collection Hand created over a half century.

In the living room, Harris is propagating some sports from a Euphorbia lactea v. variegata which she has had for many years.

Monstrous Form
Propagation
Occasionally a new plant appears in the garden, either by seed or by mutation. We are always on the lookout for such plants, and are selecting out horticulturally significant mutations for propagation and eventual distribution.
We are currently propagating a new variegated abutilon. Some of the cuttings are gold, some marbled in dark green and white.
