The Dry River
Harland Hand [1922-1998], inspired by the principles of fine art and rock formations in the High Sierra, designed this hillside garden with breathtaking views of San Francisco Bay.
Using concrete, curving lines and dramatic color combinations, Hand created an emotionally evocative space that houses an extraordinary plant collection.
One of the most admired and photographed sections of the garden, the Dry River uses succulents instead of stones to suggest a dry river bed. The aloes glow in hues of pink and orange and are particularly luminous at sunset.
Amongst the succulents are roses. "Graham Thomas," with its apricot perfume, connects the Dry River visually and aromatically to a patch of Kahili ginger (Hedychium gardnerianum) in the little Small Pond Patio.
