Artists in the Garden

Harland Hand [1922-1998], inspired by the principles of fine art and rock formations in the High Sierra, designed this hillside garden with breathtaking views of San Francisco Bay.

Using concrete, curving lines and dramatic color combinations, Hand created an emotionally evocative space that houses an extraordinary plant collection.

Artists have been invited to paint the Harland Hand Memorial Garden. Some work "en plein air" while others take photographs, then work in their studios. We are fascinated by their interpretations of the garden, how the artist sees the blue in the bark of the live oak or moves the Golden Gate Bridge so that it appears in the painting.
